In a search to produce ultrahigh-carbon steels without the granular particles characteristic of the metal, two investigators produced a material similar to Damascus steel, although itdisplays a finer grain structure and is not characterized by the surface markings. A brief survey of the history of Damascus steel is presented as well as an explanation for the technology of working the metal. -- AATA
