This paper describes the characterization of two debased silver coins which have been recovered from shipwreck sites off the coast of western Australia. Using corrosion potential measurements and the SEM in the back scattered-electron/low vacuum mode, it was revealed that the coins were forgeries with a copper-rich metal core and silver surface layers.
