The presence of chlorides on the surface of outdoor bronzes has been of great concern to conservators, since this is the cause of bronze disease. The chemistry of the reaction of atmospheric pollutants with bronze and the resulting products are described. The National Park Service at Gettysburg contracted with the University of Maryland to provide an analysis of the bronze metals of the six major equestrian statues at the park. The methodology and the results of the tests are presented.
