Abstract
The criteria for classification of ancient ceramics were established on the basis of elemental analysis of 24 elements and the associations among geochemical elements in clay (initial raw material), coloring substances, and ceramics. The geochemical criteria of the classification are unaffected by manufacturing technology and by the chronological period of manufacture. The criteria are also unaffected by the fact that for preparing various types of ceramics, clay materials were taken from various quarries of the same geographic region. Cluster analysis of the first and second order factors (clay and colors, respectively) permitted establishing five groups of ceramics, which are described in detail. The method, utilizing the geochemical and lithological-petrographic information, permitted separating imported ceramics from homemade ones. -- AATA
