In the years 1904-1907, the Procession of Princes in Dresden, a monumental graffito created from 1873 to 1876, was, on account of detrimental structural changes in the wall and the humid climate prevailing in the Elbe valley, replaced by a replica on ceramic tiles. As early as 1910 the tiles showed minor damage caused by thermal stress. The picture again suffered damage in 1945. It was cleaned in 1979 by applying a combination of alkaline and acidic industrial cleaners with hot water under high pressure. Of the total number of 665 damaged tiles, 223 were replaced by new tiles made of the same material in the original way. The rest was restored by grouting with chlorinated rubber containing a filler made of ground tile and then retouching. Thus the picture became elastic to a certain extent while retaining as much original substance as possible.
