Abstract
Brass hardware has served as a significant decorative and functional design element common to American furniture since the early 18th century. The appearance and preservation of metal components has long been the concern of those making, restoring, or conserving period furniture. A lacquer or coating has been used through the centuries to enhance and protect the hardware. At Winterthur, we have developed a method of coating historic brasses that is consistent with this tradition.
