Abstract
This paper illustrates the role of the art historian in investigating and interpreting the context and meaning of a work of art, using as an example a still life by Cezanne, Compotier (1879-1882). The importance to Ceanne of the canvas surface and the representation of volume in space are explored and discussed. The author offers for consideration the possible influences of photography, and perhaps stereoscopy, in the representation of space in Cezanne's paintings.
