This paper introduces the Shared Responsibility seminar by discussing the roles of the artist, the curator, the conservator, and the conservation scientist in specific cases where decision making has affected the appearance and integrity of works of art. The author has chosen situations involving works by Claes Oldenburg and Canaletto to illustrate the scope and complexity of the issues relating to the shared responsibility of all those dealing with works of art.
