A report is provided on the current supplies and practices used in curation of ichthyological collections. It is compiled by scientists from the Museum of Comparative Zoology in Cambridge, Maine, the Natural Sciences Museum in Philadelphia, the Museum of Zoology in Ann Arbor, Michigan and the Museum of Natural History in Lawrence, Kansas. A questionnaire was sent out to major ichthyological collection centers, inquiring about collection and preserving supplies that were used. The report is outlined according to the questionnaire and is to be used by members of the American Society of Ichthyologists. The report begins with definitions and the history of some of the materials used, such as fixatives, refixation, preservative storage media and recommendations. Specimen containers, including screw-top bottles and closures, gasket-top bottles and specimen tanks are discussed in detail. The checking of collections for evaporation problems is also mentioned, according to specific containers and preservatives used. Inks, labels and the collection environment are discussed. Electronic data processing (EDP) and compactors, or movable shelving units are noted. The questionnaire is included, as well as a list of bottle distributors and respondents.
