Abstract
The corrosion processes occurring in archaeological iron artifacts are discussed in the light of published measurements of electrode potentials and pH, and the relevance of this to the selection of conservation procedures is considered. In particular it is concluded that wet anaerobic storage of ironwork should be successful, and that corrosion may continue in sodium hydroxide solutions. See also AATA 19-1894 and 21-2272 for related studies in iron corrosion.
