Abstract
The steel from which Damascus swords were forged was made in India, where it was called wootz. The authors have investigated the cause of strength and toughness of Damascus steel, and have duplicated the processes which toughen high-carbon steel and create the characteristic damask pattern on the surface. See also AATA 17-1611 for related study in Japanese. -- AATA
