Metallographic examination of an ancient Chinese object (possibly Han) in the form of a flat-bottomed cup indicated that it was made from cast iron with a high tin-copper coating which contained lead. Experiments were carried out to simulate the production method, and the microstructures of the results were compared with that of the object. Various uses had been suggested for the object: in view of its hardness and good corrosion resistance with respect to some foods or drugs, its use as a mortar for grinding seemed the most reasonable suggestion.
