About 800 publications on the scientific analysis and conservation of historical iron objects have been listed. The references are grouped according to the use of iron by the early cultures in the Near East, the Mediterranean countries, central Europe, and the other continents. The literature on the early techniques of iron making, the analysis of slags, and the manufacture of weapons and iron objects is compiled. Finally, the references on the conservation of archaeological and marine iron are listed.
