From an historical perspective, the rising popularity of decorative architectural ironwork in the 17th century in England is presented. Iron corrosion known as rust-blow is explained; architectural ironwork presents special problems because the design elements are susceptible to moisture build-up and specific areas of stress. The author discusses his ethics of ironwork conservation. Conservation and restoration techniques are described. A great deal of exterior ironwork throughout England has reached the age (approximately 100 years old) at which corrosion sets in and accelerates; concern is expressed that nothing is being done to preserve this arcitectural heritage. -- AATA
