Abstract
Samples from 23 Himalayan metal statues, dating from the 18th or 19th centuries, were subjected to analysis first by scanning electron microscopy and then by energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence. All samples contained the element copper in the form of copper or brass, not bronze: copper, zinc, tin, lead, iron, nickel, and bismuth were detected. The analytical results agree with earlier work. The presence of lead in some of the gilded objects confirms that fire-gilding on leaded copper or brass is less durable than on lead-free objects of similar type. -- AATA
