Abstract
The collapse of outdoor lead statuary is attributable to water penetration, mainly through flaws in the casting. This water is absorbed into the original plaster-and-sand core material and causes corrosion of the iron armature and the inner surface of the lead. The major conservation problem encountered rises from the fact that standard laboratory equipment is not large enough to handle the large, heavy objects. The workshop's procedures for restoring statuary are described. -- AATA
