Room 1 of a large Late Bronze II building at Tel Yin'am in the eastern Lower Galilee of Israel yielded remains of an industrial installation. The data furnished in this report suggest the possibility that the industrial installation served as a primitive, though perhaps not successful, iron smelter datable to the 13th century _BC. This discovery contributes to knowledge of early iron technology and has significance for the history of the coming of iron. Broader implications of this discovery are that attempts at ironworking in the land of Israel antedate the Philistines and that the impetus for iron technology did not necessarily come from the Aegean but may have come from Syria and Anatolia. The purpose of this report is to present the data and the current state of the authors' interpretation of it.
