Abstract
The remainder of a brushwood basket discovered at Ralswiek in 1973 contained 425 complete coins as well as 1,719 fragments of Arab and Sassanian silver coins (dirhams). It was possible to remove the coins after the basket had been wrapped with gauze bandages saturated with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) for stabilization. The brushwood parts were preserved by a repeated application of PEG solution. Poly(vinyl acetate) latex binder was used to attach the wickerwork to a celluloid plate. The partially adhering and corroding coins were separated from each other in an alkaline complex-III-solution at 80°C. Subsequently, an electrolytic treatment was applied in a five percent sodium hydroxide solution. After partial mechanical cleaning under the microscope, the residual deposits were removed by using a sodium sulfite thiourea solution. In conclusion, the silver coins were stabilized by means of a three percent alcohol benzotriazole solution and dried at 60°C. The coins were provided with a protective coating after scientific analysis. A poly(methyl methacrylate) varnish (Pinflex LT 41) to which benzotriazole is added as a corrosion inhibitor was being considered for use.
