Maintenance and rehabilitative cleaning of firearms are discussed. Of particular interest to collectors, curators, and conservators are comments on new polarizing or metal-affinity products which have become the U.S. military replacement for bore cleaners, light oils, and general preservatives. This material is reported to be a mixture of Teflon and other substances. One example of these products is BreakFree, manufactured by San/Bar Corp, a product said to be suitable for medium-term storage. Cited is a test by the National Rifle Association in which a nail treated with this material was half submerged in water for a year without rusting. Also mentioned are use of ammonia and mercury as bore cleaners (along with notations that they formerly were used routinely but now are considered very dangerous).
