The use of photographic materials for the storage of records having longtime value has necessitated the development of standards to specify the important considerations in this field. Satisfactory longtime storage is dependent upon the following three factors: (1) Suitability of the photographic material; (2) Satisfactory photographic processing conditions; (3) Recommended storage conditions. Two standards have been written specifying the requirements for silver-gelatin-type film ANS Specifications for Photographic Film for Archival Records, Silver-Gelatin Type, on Cellulose Ester Base, and ANS Specifications for Photographic Film for Archival Records, Silver-Gelatin Type, on Polyester Base. Specifications for proper conditions are also included in these documents. Recommended storage conditions are given in ANS Practice for Storage of Processed Safety Photographic Film; ANS Practice for Storage of Processed Photographic Plates; and ANS Practice for Storage of Black-and-White Photographic Paper Prints. This standard (ANSI PH1.53-1978) is an auxiliary document and deals specifically with the enclosure materials used in storage. It was formerly printed as ANSI PH4.40-1958 and represents an update of that standard. It pertains to the materials used in filing enclosures, as well as to construction details of folders, sleeves, and envelopes.
