Abstract
Three collections containing early synthetic materials (plastics) were surveyed in order to assess the types of deterioration in relation to the composition of the materials and the storage conditions. The possibilities for chemical analysis and problems involved are discussed. The results of the inventory are presented along with considerations on the chemistry of degradation phenomena. General guidelines for the preventive conservation of plastics are given. -- SCMRE
