Abstract
To obtain data for a relation between age and the D/L ratio of amino acids, three fossil trees, 3710 years B.P. (present being 1950), 9000-1000 years B.P., and approximately 10<sup>-5</sup> years B.P. were chemically treated and analyzed by gas chromatography. Racemization was measured with pure L-amino acids under the same conditions of hydrolysis as for the fossil trees. The degrees of racemization were determined as follows: alanine 2.78, aspartate 10. 27, glutamate 2.6., iso-leucine 0, leucine 8. 63, methionine 11.00, phenylalanine 7.45, proline 0, serine 9.61, and valine 6.59%. The results from the samples were corrected by using the above data. Fossil samples were hydrolyzed in 6N HCL at 110° for 20 hours. The solution was passed through an ion-exchange column to obtain free amino acids. The amino acids were converted to N-trifluoroacetyl iso-Pr esters and analyzed by gas chromatography. A Chirasil-Val glass capillary column was used to resolve enantiomers. The D/L ratios of amino acids in the samples were greater with older age; racemization increased with age. -- AATA
