Abstract
Françoise Reynaud, Conservator of the photography collections at the Carnavalet Museum in Paris, France, answers questions concerning a study tour of Canadian and American museums she recently undertook. She visited the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Chicago Art Institute, and the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, Texas. She discusses the administrative and financial organisation of these institutions, their methodology including computer uses, their physical facilities, the size of their personnel, and their level of training and competence. She expresses surprise at the lack of a general policy on the national level but acknowledges a higher level of independence for the restorers. For her survey of the field of restoration of photographic collections, her specialty, she visited the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Boston and Anne Cartier-Bresson describes her own visit to the Conservation Center of Works of Art and Historic Artifacts in Philadelphia. -- AATA
