Abstract
An explanation of the law as it affects museums and individuals associated with museums. The major emphasis is on the collection, including: management policies, accessioning, deaccessioning, loans incoming and outgoing, unclaimed loans, international loans, temporary custody, found objects, promised gifts, tax considerations, appraisals and authentications, care of collections, insurance, access to collections, and visitor and employee safety. The museum is defined and to whom it is accountable. The appendices cover the art and artifacts indemnity act, immunity from seizure statute, convention on cultural property implementation act, and convention on prohibiting and preventing illicit import, export, and transfer of cultural property. There are extensive notes for the use of legal counsel. (Abstractor's note: This is an important book to all individuals who are concerned with the care of collections. Many sections relate readily to the work of conservators.) -- AATA
