Fine painted pottery from Corinth was shown to be surprisingly constant in composition over several hundred years. The clays closest to the clay used in the ancient pottery were found near the Potter's Quarter and in the neighborhood of the Tile Works, 1.9 miles distant. It was definitely established that Corinthian type pottery was manufactured in Corfu; the Corinthian type pottery from Aegina which was analyzed has been manufactured in Corinth. Undecorated pottery of light colored clay was manufactured in both Corinth and Corfu. Jars with the Corfu coin insignia were all of Corfu manufacture. Certain of the undecorated jars from Corinth (some untempered and some tempered with hornfels) matched the fine painted ware, but the undecorated ware showed considerably more variation in analysis than the fine painted ware. It seems that the manufacture of fine painted pottery was closely controlled in Corinth, but possibly the undecorated ware was manufactured locally somewhat as it is today in Aegina. -- AATA
