Transit controlled surface collecting is a fast and inexpensive method for obtaining an excellent rendition of a scatter of cultural material. In most instances, it produces more accurate results in less time and for less cost than the grid system. Use of a compass and measuring tape can be used as a substitute in small areas where there are no obstructions but otherwise use of a transit is best. However, the transit operator must use short-cuts in order for the collection to be performed with optimal efficiency. A well-controlled collection could virtually be replaced on the site without significant change from the original scatter configuration.
