This volume does report to some extent on archaeological results but it is much more closely focused upon archaeological problem-solving in a variety of research contexts, both in the field and the laboratory. The practical ideas presented herein are directed towards the field archaeologist in order to expand his available range of research tools with which to intensify, broaden, or prolong his data recovery capabilities and to make his investigation of the past more efficient. Efficiency is again not and end in itself, only the means towards finishing archaeological tasks with greater dispatch, less expenditure of funds or energy, and recovery of greater amounts of information. Archaeological efficiency in practical terms should produce a surplus, therefore, of time, money, and labor over archaeological inefficiency; with this surplus the archaeologist can collect additional evidence or spend additional time on interpretation, and the size of the data sample and firmness of the conclusions reached can be improved.
