Abstract
Describes the technical examinations, which have been done, during the conservation and restoration of the altar in the cathedral at Arhus (Denmark) which is a work of Bernt Notke, dated at 1472. The recovery of the overpainted inscriptions Bernardus and fecit me confirms the attribution. The construction of the altar shows that the coronation on the top dates from the same time as the rest of the altar and is not, as so often presumed, a later addition. Examinations of the carving technique used on the figures and of the paint layer on the panels and the flgures are discussed. On the back of the altar some paintings have been recovered which were of a later date made in tempera directly on the raw wood. -- AATA
