Abstract
Wall paintings and plasters from a dislocated settlement of Gizeh (1st-4th dynasty), walland stone paintings from Thebes (18th dynasty), and a sample of post-firing painted pottery of the same age and occurrence were studied. The plaster from Gizeh consists of sand and a lime binder. Plaster of Paris was used to bind the pigment. Their application technique and phase content is similar to that of the post-firing painted pottery from this area. Both kinds of painting may have been performed by the same workshop. A broad palette of pigments provided a large selection of colors. Among those found the synthetic pigments were Egyptian blue and green frit and the earth pigments included oripment, dimorphite, goethite, hematite, and huntite. The abundant use of the latter is surprising and may have been caused by good pigment properties of the mineral. The question of where the Egyptian craftsmen obtained the As<sub>2</sub>S<sub>5</sub> minerals and the huntite is discussed. Ceramic fragments found in a tomb of the 18th dynasty near Thebes were painted with Egyptian blue, orpiment, and huntite. The pigments were embedded into plaster of Paris and then coated with mastix, evidently because the paint layer did not contain sufficient binder. -- AATA
