Object shape alone is not the basis for inferences on artifact use: a preliminary examination of scratches on various 18th century lead-glazed earthenwares from Canadian historic sites and in collections in England has shown that wear-marks provide readily observable attributes for the investigation of use. In addition, methods of storage -- e.g. leaning on dresser-back, or stacked -- may be revealed. Other marks, such as fire-blackening or food stains, are mentioned. -- AATA
