Part I of a four-part article, written by Moorey, gives the archaeological background of the objects from Hacilar, Turkey, and the reasons for investigating their authenticity, and the details of the investigation, known as the Oxford inquiry. Part II, written by Aitken, outlines the principles behind thermoluminescence testing and reports on its application to the Hacilar objects. Examinations repeatedly proved that many of the objects were fired within the last few hundred years and were therefore forgeries. The possibility of refiring ancient objects, which would invalidate the tests, is considered. 18 of 66 objects for which there are results proved ancient.Part III is a list of objects tested for thermoluminescence.
