In 1978-79 two of the twenty-eight panel paintings from the retable at Birthaelm had been cleaned of their paintings of the apostles, executed in 1821. The original painting of the four Latin patristic writers was discovered. The characteristics of the artist are discussed. His work dates from between 1483 and 1515 according to inscriptions. Included also is a technical description of the panels, the layers of painting with black under-drawing, and traces of gilded paper-stars. The cleaning and retouching are described. -- AATA
