A type of 18th century wall painting, found in the decoration of country castles and town residences in Transdanubia, the western part of Hungary, imitate wallhangings. They reveal distinctive features in their execution and a characteristic technique. Various silk wallhangings from simple ornaments to figures were already known to the artists and craftsmen who adapted this new technique and its principles with surprising flexibility. The choice of technique indicates its temporary character and its style the contemporary taste favoring chinoiserie and motifs from nature; this explains why these pictures were painted al secco.
