The establishment of criteria by which the authenticity of an object can be judged can be considered under three main headings: (1) studies in ancient technology, (2), studies of corrosion and deterioration, and (3) absolute dating methods. The various techniques of examination are summarized. Several examples of authentication in practice are given, indicating that the detection of forgeries can be extremely simple, or quite difficult.
