Abstract
The theory and functioning of the energy-dispersive x-ray fluorescence analyser are discussed. Analysis of silver and brass reference standards are given. About 100 silver objects of British origin and about 100 silver objects of American origin made between 1700 and 1900 were analyzed. An 18th century silver tankard was shown to be partly modern silver. Silver removal rates, as accomplished by use of various silver polishes, were also studied.
