The famous Matthias stall, dating from 1483, has survived the vicissitudes of history in the Gothic church of St. Giles in Bártfa. Although its maker remains unknown, the discovery of the letter F on it may lead to an identification. The stall was separated into two sections and one seat was acquired by the Hungarian National Museum in 1915; the other seat had been destroyed. Menyhért Majhen restored and reconstructed the seat in 1930. For the millenary of St. Giles, some of the church furniture, including the stall, were restored. This restoration was carried out in 1981 after a detailed examination of the literature and consultation with experts. Material tests, consolidation, cleaning, completion and surface protection were accompanied by thorough documentation. -- AATA
