Abstract
The presence of soluble salts in stone does not always lead to decay. Salt crystallization can be disruptive or cementing depending upon the pore structure of the stone and the crystallization pressure that develops within the pores. Pore measurements on six types of stone and calculated pressure values are used to explain the decay morphology, and to show the correlation between the observed alteration processes and the crystallization pressure, which depends upon the pore-size distribution.
