An inventory of the Great Wardrobe in the 14th and 15th centuries shows an account of silks imported for clothing the Royal Family. Materials were imported from Spain, Italy, and China; England at that time did not have an industry for weaving cloth. Some silks purchased include weft-faced compound twills, herringbone twills, and lampas silks. Some lampas silks were later woven with satin. Gold and plain silks were most popular during the early 14th century. Velvet also grew in popularity, replacing the weft-faced silks.
