Abstract
Experimentation with various designs of updraught kilns indicates that firebox design has a bearing on the oxidation and reduction characteristics of the kiln. The experiments indicate that Roman and Medieval potters may have used a grate, despite the lack of archaeological evidence. It is suggested that a number of distinct types of kilns geared to particular products may have existed. Experiments show how reconstructive models may be adjusted.
