Abstract
Technical examination of the painting (National Gallery No. 937) revealed a double oil ground as is found among Canaletto's work of the mid-1730's to mid-1740's. Naples yellow was detected in areas of bright yellow, orange and in areas of mixed green. Linseed oil was identified in the orange-brown ground layer, while drying oil was established as the medium.
