This pamphlet studies the effects of formaldehyde emission on museum collections, specifically on the storage and exhibit cases made from particleboard and plywood. The chemistry, emission processes, and factors that affect emission levels are then studied, and measurement methods indicated. The consequences of exposure to human health are noted. Metal corrosion by atmospheric formaldehyde is detailed, and this study extends to that of damages to several other materials (shells, fossils, sandstone, glass, paper, textiles). Several experimental procedures are described and the results given for testing wood product emissions, for testing the corrosivity of wood products, testing exhibition cases and testing materials. Possible remedies were investigated by a literature search (cited at length) and consultation with industrial chemists; mitigating solutions were also explored and include increasing ventilation, use of buffering and absorbing agents, ammonia fumigation, use of various scavengers, ultraviolet radiation, and temperature and humidity control. The release of dangerous substances from paints and coatings applied to wood-based construction materials to protect them from damage by formaldehyde is examined in the same manner, i.e., measurement methods, testings and presentation of mitigating approaches.
