That chemical analysis can be of considerable aid in detecting modern imitations of ancient bronze objects is well illustrated by the results obtained on the examination of a doubtful specimen. The statuette examined exhibited a thin patina, a relatively large presence of zinc, and very few impurities--all suspect characteristics. The analysis of the specimen fails to agree with those of ancient statuary bronzes from other localities, and so it seems highly probable that this statuette was of quite recent manufacture, especially since the formula of the alloy as disclosed by analysis corresponds quite closely to that of a favorite modern composition.
