The structure of a cope dating from the 13th century was studied to determine how it could best be cleaned, remounted, and reconstructed. A Kyowa binocular microscope was used to examine the embroidery and ground silk. Metal threads were found in the embroidery, and metal filaments were wound around a silk core. The cope was mounted on a fabric having a similar composition so as not to draw attention to damaged areas. The cope was cleaned with a solvent, White Spirit BS 245.
