Abstract
The majority of analyses of early glass have been concerned with major and minor chemical elements which are not usually suited to the study of provenance or localized manufacture. The problems for glass are uniquely complex in that any search directed towards provenance must first be able to identify the contribution of both the sand and alkali sources used in the basic glass melt. Inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICPS) allows a comprehensive range of major, minor, and trace elements to be determined and thus provides the correlations betweeen major and trace elements which are fundamental to the determination of raw material types and associated impurities. The ICPS technique has been used to analyze a group of Saxon glass from Southampton and Winchester and the results show discrete compositional groupings which may represent separate glass working traditions.
