This article is the first of several reviewing new techniques of micro-observation. A description is given of a recently developed type of electron microscope which, for many specimens has great advantages over the conventional transmission electron microscope. Factors limiting the resolution of the new insturment are discussed and the formation of contrast in final image is explained. The more valuable features of the scanning electron microscope are described.
