Electron spin resonance spectroscopy can provide information of interest to archaeologists from a wide range of materials. The main areas of archaeological enquiry addressed by this technique are dating, establishment of thermal histories and provenancing, and the study of thermal history in particular is a major new contribution to archaeological science from electron spin resonance spectroscopy. These areas are reviewed briefly in this paper and future developments of this techniques are highlighted.
