The meaning of an alloy in the Bronze Age context is defined and the problems of identifying the alloyer's intentions outlined. The need to explore the sequence of alloying in each metalworking area rather than assuming it adheres to a conventional pattern is stressed and illustrated with examples from the Welsh Bronze Age. Examples are given of both the geographical and chronological variation of alloy content. The situation where alloys were produced by ore selection is also discussed. Finally there is a review of the distribution of alloying skills and the form in which metal was distributed for alloying discussed. The importance of scrap as the major influence on our view of Bronze Age compositions is emphasized.
