Abstract
Methacrylate derivatives of hydroxybenzophenones can be chemically incorporated into urethane coatings systems by copolymerization into hydroxy-modified acrylic polymers. The UV stability of urethane coatings made with such copolymers at least equals that of control coatings made with physically added hydroxybenzophenone. They are more resistant to extraction and volatilization. The results suggest that with internal UV absorbers, the mono 2-hydroxybenzophenone derivitives are more effective than 2, 2'-dihydroxybenzophenones, in contrast to the opposite results generally reported for external absorbers.
