Because of the nearly complete disappearance of papyrus in Egypt, experimental plots were started at Giza from plants imported from the Sudan where this species is still abundant. The ancient art of making papyrus sheets had been completely forgotten, and the only source of information was the writings of Pliny. Frequently, the descriptions given were inaccurate, so that the technique of making paper had to be developed experimentally. This technique, be-lieved not to differ essentially from the ancient art, is illustrated, including the harvesting of papyrus, the preparation of strips, and their bonding into a sheet; the properties of papyrus paper are described. The modern papyrus sheet, which has good printability, can be used for reproducing ancient papyrus documents and as a drawing paper. -- AATA
