Reports on an experiment partly designed to test criteria for trample damage set up by Tringham et al. 1974, and produces a comprehensive model to demonstrate the complexity of the process and the number of crucial variables involved. Soil context needs to be taken into account; when that is done, a revised set of trample criteria is produced.
